The ancient wellness science called Ayurveda has its roots deeply entrenched in the Vedic texts from Indian sages who wrote them thousands of years ago as a “way of life”. Ayurveda does not believe in medicine for every ailment, rather it focuses on basic changes in lifestyle to achieve good health and on correcting issues with the said changes.

Charaka Samhita is an age-old ayurvedic treatise that has a whole lot of text on how to battle major ailments. It also has mention ayurvedic medication which is mainly made up of herbal components. One of the most revered treatments as “Panchakarma”. It is a detoxification of the body as well as the mind and uses a five-pronged approach.

Subsequently in the process, it is also known to disable or arrest (depending on the stages) certain diseases. The procedure focuses on balancing the doshas and boosting immunity which in turn helps one to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Panchakarma is made up of five pradhana (main) karmas:

  1. Vamana: This is therapeutic vomiting that is a must for people who have a high variant of the Kapha dosha. On specific days, patients are made to ingest medicines as part of the snehapana process. This targets the upper tract of the human body and accumulates the toxins and directs them to the nearest available channel to throw them out; hence through vomiting. It is a cleanse that is known to help people especially with upper respiratory problems. Ayurvedic medical practitioners use herbal decoctions to help with emesis.
  2. Virechana: This is a purgatory process that has been designed especially for people with the pitta doshas. Here again, the snehapana process is done similar to vamana. But here the medicines accumulate the toxins in the lower tract of the abdomen and consequently, once the ayurvedic medical practitioner gives the go ahead, the toxins are removed through the bowel route.
  3. Basti: This is a herbal oil enema that is administered to patients with vata doshas. This is a very useful way of cleansing and here, herbal decoctions are injected into the rectum for quicker absorption and the toxin removal from the colon happens faster; thus cleansing the lower tract minutely.
  4. Nasya: The process of administering medication is through the nasal route and this is very useful in hormonal balance. This also helps in upper respiratory tract detoxification. The vata, pitta and kapha prakritis are balanced well in the body through this activity.
  5. Raktamokshana: Commonly, this is done with two methods depending on the type of disease and preference of the patient as well as the ayurvedic medical practitioner. One is rea jalauka vicharana which is the leech therapy and the other one is siravyadha which is a venous puncture. Both are simple to implement and are helpful in the removal of toxins and impurities from the blood. Especially beneficial for herpes, ulcers, tumours, skin disorders to name a few.

Five skin disorders that Panchakarma deals with efficiently

  • Eczema: Depending on whether it is acute or chronic, eczema is a skin disease that has reactive patterns such as redness, swelling, itching, dry and flaky skin. Its occurrence is mainly associated with the ears, face, armpits and eyebrows. When the immune system of one’s body is impacted negatively, the accumulation of toxins occurs and this triggers the said disorder. Panchakarma focuses on the detoxification and cleansing process of the skin and thus, treating eczema by soothing and toning the affected areas.
  • Psoriasis: This is an inflammation of the skin surface that happens due to various factors. When there is an increase in the epidermal proliferation which happens with the division of cells increasing rapidly and spreading on the basal skin layers, this disease is triggered. Panchakarma focuses on treating psoriasis with blood and tissue purification. A variety of herbs are used to protect the reinforcement of tissues and skin because this is a disease that can recur and become chronic. The patient has to maintain the rejuvenation of the skin even after the treatment responsibly.
  • Acne vulgaris: This global skin phenomenon can leave permanent scars if not treated well and in time. It happens due to excessive oil sebum production which tends to clog the hair follicles and cause this skin condition. It mainly affects teenagers but also happens to adults. If it gets chronic, which is known to happen, the treatment is mandatory. Panchakarma has a multifold approach to this type of treatment. Firstly, an improved and balanced diet is prescribed which helps in better digestion. Then, the blood and skin are detoxified. Finally, the purification of the liver is done to ensure that the digestive system is working perfectly which in turn is a definitive cure and acne vulgaris will not occur again.
  • Vitiligo: Generally this starts from the back, wrists, hands and neck. Vitiligo is a pigmentation disorder that is triggered by an auto-immunological process where the immune system of the body starts harming the body itself. Panchakarma believes that multiple imbalances cause this to happen in the body; thus impacting immunity. Hence, there are different methods used to treat different patients of vitiligo and this all depends on the stages of the disease.
  • Cellulite: Our body has lymphatic toxins that create fat depositions and cellulite. Panchakarma employs a herbal paste that is penetrative to remove the toxins. The body is then heated up with a herbal bath and this ensures the removal of any mental, emotional and physical stresses that may be in the skin tissues.
